چکیده

In the e-Science context, workflow technologies provide a problem-solving environment for researchers by facilitating the creation and execution of experiments from a pool of available data and computation services. Recent activities in the field of social simulation indicate the need to improve the scientific rigour of agent-based modelling by making simulation experiments more transparent. We argue that in order to characterise such experiments we need to go beyond low-level service composition and execution details by capturing higher-level descriptions of the scientific process making the experiment’s constraints and goals transparent. Current workflow technologies do not incorporate any representation of these goals and conditions, which we call the scientist’s intent. Our hypothesis is that by extending workflow representation in this way, researchers would be able to analyse, verify, execute, monitor and re-use scientific workflows more effectively.

Enhancing workflow with a semantic description of scientific intent

In the e-Science context, workflow technologies provide a problemsolving environment for researchers by facilitating the creation and execution of experiments from a pool of available services. In this paper we will show how Semantic Web technologies can be used to overcome a limitation of current workflow languages by capturing experimental constraints and goals, which we term scientist’s inte...

A Semantic Grid Service for Experimentation with an Agent-Based Model of Land-Use Change

Agent-based models, perhaps more than other models, feature large numbers of parameters and potentially generate vast quantities of results data. This paper shows through the FEARLUS-G project (an ESRC e-Social Science Initiative Pilot Demonstrator Project) how deploying an agent-based model on the Semantic Grid facilitates international collaboration on investigations using such a model, and c...

Semantic Email as a Communication Medium for the Social Semantic Desktop

In this paper, we introduce a formal email workflow model based on traditional email, which enables the user to define and execute ad-hoc workflows in an intuitive way. This model paves the way for semantic annotation of implicit, well-defined workflows, thus making them explicit and exposing the missing information in a machine processable way. Grounding this work within the Social Semantic De...

Ensuring the Semantic Correctness of Workflow Processes: An Ontological Approach

Workflow verification has been known as an important aspect of workflow management systems. Many existing approaches concentrate on ensuring the correctness of workflow processes at the syntactic level. However, these approaches are not sufficient to detect errors at the semantic level. This paper contributes to ensure the semantic correctness of workflow processes. First, we propose a formal d...

Ontology Exemplification and Modeling for aSPOCMS in the Semantic Web

Ontology can not only describe the workflow data of the any university more easily understood by computers in semantic encoding scenario, but can also integrate users data from different sources and in different forms for reasoning. Workflow technology promises to increase the efficiency in the execution of workflow based processes. The administrative workflow data of a typical higher learning ...
